"SUPERSIZE ME” was the order of the day at South Port as the company took possession of a NEW HYSTER H48.00XM-16 Container Handler.
Jason Manak the NZ Sales Manager for Gough Materials Handling (GMH) says the Hyster 48 tonne capacity forklift is highly appointed with a dedicated 20 / 40 top lift attachment and the ability to stack laden 20 ft and 40 ft containers up to 5 high.
“The largest ship into Bluff, the MSC Sardinia, was alongside the new HYSTER 48 tonne container handler on delivery day.
“The forklift is supplied standard with a safety speed control system relative to lift height and load conditions. The cab is fully equipped with air conditioning, air suspension seat, sun screens, air circulation fans, reading lights and much more. The cab is spacious with great visibility with all the comforts of a late model quality vehicle” says Jason.
South Port has gone from strength to strength in recent times. Shipping line MSC began calling at the port early last year which had been positive for the company and southern businesses. This has provided easier access to global markets for importers and exporters.

Iconic New Zealand boat builder RAYGLASS BOATS has taken delivery of a brand new HYSTER H3.5TX forklift.
Rayglass Boats have forged a reputation for building some of the highest quality boats in New Zealand over many years. As a company they have become known for their exacting standards that has set the design yardstick in the marketplace.
The search for the correct model forklift was no different with a number of brands looked at to meet Rayglass Boats exacting demands.
“The HYSTER came out on top in all areas” said Dave Larsen, Rayglass sales and marketing manager. “We needed a high quality, reliable and compact forklift to handle our large and heavy moulds used during the manufacturing process. It was a pleasure to deal with the vibrant and helpful team at GMH who came up with the perfect solution.”
GMH NZ sales manager Jason Manak believes the association with Rayglass has provided some great insights into their business philosophy and focus which he sees as very similar to that of GMH.
“Rayglass build boats – that’s all they build and they're very good at it. Hyster build forklifts – that’s all we build and we're good at it. There are many companies who stray from their specialisation and ultimately become a “jack of all trades / master of none” type of company. There is no danger of Rayglass or GMH-Hyster becoming on of those” said Jason.

New Hyster HY-TEL offers an industry leading telemetry system that could revolutionise forklift fleet management.
Gough Materials Handling national sales manager, Jason Manak, says Hy-Tel is the most advanced system of its type in existence and will set the standard for a new era in fleet management. “They say knowledge is power and Hy-Tel delivers a level of knowledge and functionality that we have never seen in this industry before.”
At the heart of Hy-Tel is an industrial strength Electronic Control Unit used to capture information which will enhance the management of lift truck fleets, and provide lift truck users with a high level of control over lift truck use. Jason says the Hy-Tel system will help fleet owners eliminate many redundant activities such as paper-based recording of lift truck checks, and training of operators.
“Hy-Tel is the next-generation in fleet systems technology. It provides real time information for managing forklift fleets,” he says. “Fleet owners can monitor the utilisation of each forklift, establish speed control and speed zoning for their machines, and can even tell if the operator has failed to do up their seatbelt.
“Hy-Tel gives owners the power of having detailed timely reports at their fingertips. They can obtain a comprehensive record of the machine’s operating history, including any alerts for speeding, lifting over capacity, mechanical faults or impact damage.”
While the lift truck is operating, information is logged and stored in Hy-Tel. This data is then transmitted over wireless or cellular networks to a network server. Hyster dealers can gain access to this data through the Hyster Hy-Tel portal on the Hyster website.
The Hyster Hy-Tel portal is a powerful web-based user interface – which includes the ability to create automatic email reports and alerts for both dealers and fleet owners.
Interaction with Hy-Tel is intuitive. Through the use of a touch screen and audio tones, the operator is alerted to give feedback to the unit or to raise awareness of a potential problem – such as overloading.
The pre-start checklist features of the Hyster Hy-Tel unit allow clients to run a paperless system which completes their OSH obligations under chain of responsibility legislation.
Basically – the operator must answer a set of OSH and customized questions prior to the vehicle being allowed to start.
“That means the operator can ‘turn on the truck’ to check electrical functions – but the engine will not crank until the checklist is complete” explains Jason. The system can be set up to ask questions at different intervals – such as once per shift, or once per day. It is preferred that the system does not ask questions each time the truck is started.
“Hy-Tel can ‘tag out’ a truck if it is deemed too dangerous to operate. ‘Tagged out’ trucks can only be ‘de-tagged’ by a service technician or an appropriately authorised staff member,” he says.
Further – the system can ‘flag’ certain questions as being critical and have the Hyster Hy-Tel portal email direct to the fleet maintenance team or Hyster service team if a problem arises.
Hyster Hy-Tel has the ability to ‘warn’ the operator with increasing levels of alarm during overspeed. Finally – if an operator persists in ‘speeding’, Hy-Tel logs this ‘event’, for investigation.
In conjunction with accessories – the pre-set speed limit in Hy-Tel can interface to a speed limiter to control the speed of the truck. This can also extend to the pre-set speed limit changing according to the area that the truck is operating in (i.e. zoned speed management).
When a Hyster Hy-Tel unit is fitted to a truck, it monitors the presence of an operator using the equipment. This is particularly useful when the operator leaves the truck – where Hy-Tel will shut the engine down after a preset amount of time – saving fuel or battery power.
“All Hyster Hy-Tel units can be configured to ‘look’ for operator presence followed by ‘application of the seatbelt’ – in that order,” says Jason. “The Hyster Hy-Tel unit actually prompts the operator to apply the seatbelt or harness hitch at the right time.
“It is smart enough to know if the seat belt was plugged in ‘before’ the operator got in the seat. “If the operator should ‘unbuckle’ during use, Hy-Tel gives the operator a preset amount of ‘leeway’ time and then starts warning the operator with second by second alarms. After a period of time, Hy-Tel logs this ‘event’ for investigation by the company. The Hy-Tel unit can also be programmed to slow the truck to a crawl and/or turn it off in conjunction with accessories.”
Lifting a load that is in excess of a preset capacity will activate an audio alarm and a warning message on the Hy-Tel screen. Hyster Hy-Tel also records the ‘overload’ as an event, which can be accessed in a report through the Hyster Hy-Tel portal.
The Hy-Tel system provides a number of reports and records a vast range of data from each machine including: operator ID, start/stop times, end drive hour meter reading, end drive traction hour reading, end drive hydraulic pump hour meter reading unit number (the 12 pin Hy-Tel does not have an input for Hydraulic Pump Meter) , average speed, peak speed, total time, moving time, weighing time, lifting time, average load, average lift, and much more.
Listing of historic service, hour meters, date and time conducted forecast for next service date gives fleet managers more power and control. Fleet managers can also subscribe to an automatic email service that reports faults as they occur, and sends service emails as services are due.

Port Taranaki’s container handling fleet has grown by 50% with the purchase of three HYSTER container handlers and a HYSTER 5 tonne forklift from Gough Materials Handling (GMH).
The sizeable new HYSTER machines feature two HYSTER RS45-31CH (reach stackers), a HYSTER H22.00XM-12EC (empty container handler) and a HYSTER H5.00DX counterbalance forklift.
The HYSTER Reach Stackers have the ability to stack laden containers 5 high in the first and second row and 3 rows deep. The container weights can be up to 45T in the first row and 31T in the second row with 16T in the third row.
“There are many advantages of using Reach Stackers in an operation as apposed to a first row stacker” says New Zealand Sales Manager Jason Manak. “In saying this each site and operation is different and this is where the experience of the Gough team comes into play. GMH have the ability to provide a detailed analysis of each site, make recommendations, and provide advantages and disadvantages for each option”.
The Empty Container Handler supplied to Port Taranaki can handle 2 x 20 foot containers or 2 x 40 foot containers and will stack these up to 7 high.
Jason Manak says that GMH have enjoyed a strong relationship with Ports of Taranaki for many years.
“Securing this business has further cemented an enduring and positive partnership for both businesses.”
“This is really pleasing for GMH as we look to build our partnership further and play our part in supporting the Port’s operation.”
The evaluation process for the new equipment was very detailed involving assessment of a variety of manufacturers with a focus on quality, track-record, performance and ongoing service and support.
During the evaluation process a visit by some of the Port Taranaki team to GMH Head Office in Auckland was undertaken. While there the team viewed New Zealand’s largest reach stacker in operation at The Ports of Auckland. The machine viewed was a RS46-41CH which can stack containers up to 5 high with a capacity of 46T in the first row, 41T in the second and 26T in the third row. This machine and the views of the operators certainly impressed the team from Taranaki.
“HYSTER certainly has a significant track record with big trucks and as a leader in port operational-equipment, however we believe that our service makes the biggest difference” said Jason. “At Gough Materials Handling we’re committed to our customer throughout the lifecycle of our products, and beyond.”
The Port has been using HYSTER equipment for a number of years including a reach stacker, battery electric and diesel forklifts. The Port has had a great run from these HYSTER machines over many years.
One fact generally overlooked is that “HYSTER ONLY BUILD FORKLIFTS.” The attention to research and development is immense where other manufactures also build cars, trucks or even boats. HYSTER focus on providing high quality, robust Materials Handling Equipment and have done this in New Zealand through Gough Materials Handling for over 63 years.
